Practice News and Calendar – May (2013)

Dear Practice Friends,

john and moiraIn the world of Pilates (and yoga as well), the idea of lineage, the transmission of knowledge from teacher to student, continues to hold a lot of value for instructors. There are only a few direct students of Joseph Pilates (known as Pilates elders) who went on to teach who are alive today. Moira Stott Merrithew, the founder of STOTT PILATES, studied with Romana Kryzanowska in NYC, a Pilates elder. And there are a number of instructor trainers in the STOTT PILATES circle who trained with Moira when she and her husband Lindsey founded their company 25 years ago. We all get a little wide-eyed when we get to train with someone who trained with Moira directly, as most of us get to know these master instructor teachers by watching the many instructional DVD’s that comprise our reference library at our home studios. The notion of getting to train with Moria and these master instructor trainers directly then is a real dream for us.

PJLast weekend two of our instructors, Joy Karl and Leslie Harshman, had a dream come true when they traveled to NYC and got to train with Moira, PJ O’Clair, John Garey and Kim Kraushar for the Merrithew Health and Fitness Mindful Movement World Tour, where they learned about two new products, Zenga and Core. Look for elements of these programs to appear in your workouts soon! Also, check out the proud pics of Joy and Leslie with their teachers in the instructor news section below.

Instructor News

JennyMcCalipWe are happy to announce that apprentice instructor Jenny McCalip has passed her second in-house exam, which is modeled after the SOTT PILATES® certification exam given at the licensed training center in Columbus. Jenny has done an excellent job of building competencies in the following areas: anatomy, biomechanics, memorization of the essential and intermediate levels of the SOTT PILATES® repertoire for matwork and reformer, verbal and tactile cueing, postural analysis and programming for postural types. She will now be charging full price for sessions as she builds her client base and looks to take her certification exam for Reformer and Matwork in the fall. Congratulations, Jenny!

IMG_0651Meanwhile at the Merrithew Health & Fitness Mindful Movement World Tour, Joy Karl trained in ZEN*GA™, “an innovative fusion of exercise science and mindful movement that brings about clarity of the mind while releasing body tension through purposeful movement.” Her master instructors were PJ O’Clair and Kim Kraushar. From Joy, on her experiences with her teachers:

“The ‘stars’ of STOTT PILATES were so friendly and approachable. They were willing to share their own struggles with the exercises, stay late to help us refine an exercise or concept, and even pose for pictures.”

IMG_0655Leslie had the pleasure to work with John Garey and Moira Stott Merrithew . Says Leslie, “Weekend well spent! It was exciting training with master instructors of Merrithew Health & Fitness. I was able to identify that no matter where we are in our training we are all still students learning from each other. The warm and welcoming spirit of these people make me proud to be part of the team.

Research: Do we have to cool down after exercise?

From Gretchen Reynolds, in the Well section of comes new research on the value of the cool down:

“Contrary to what most of us learned in gym class, cooling down after a workout won’t substantially improve limberness or reduce muscle soreness. A brief walk after exercise, however, may prevent dizziness by maintaining normal blood flow to the brain.”

Doctor’s Orders: 20 Minutes Of Meditation Twice a Day

Michael Kunesh was kind enough to forward us tis article from the Wall Street Journal highlighting the prescription of meditation in integrative medicine practices across the country to help with lowering blood pressure, coping with pain and depression, and even treating irritable bowel syndrome.

Research: How Exercise May Help Memory

Once again from Gretchen Reynolds and the NY Times:

“Two new experiments, one involving people and the other animals, suggest that regular exercise can substantially improve memory, although different types of exercise seem to affect the brain quite differently. The news may offer consolation for the growing numbers of us who are entering age groups most at risk for cognitive decline.”

Almonds have been found to be a great way to help improve your cholesterol levels. Not only that, almonds also make the bad  cholesterol – LDL – much less likely to oxidize, something that can lead to blocked arteries. So add a handful of almonds each day to your cholesterol reducing diet and keep LDL in check.
