Practice News and Calendar – April (2013)

Dear Practice Friends,

yogaposesmedicinewomanMeditation hit the mainstream media repeatedly last month, owing largely to the Oprah and Deepak 21 Day Meditation Challenge that started on March 11th.

As a fan and student of meditation I am thrilled to see it gaining in popularity. In the summers between 2001 and 2006, I accumulated almost ten months of time in retreat centers in the U.S. and France, where I learned about what meditation is and also what it isn’t. I’ve included two very good articles in the newsletter today that speak to the benefits of meditation, as well as the myths about the practice that people sometimes have.

As the many testimonials indicate on the Chopra Center website, meditation can be a life changing practice, and I agree because it has been hugely beneficial for me. It has been my intention for some time to offer a course here through Practice. If you have ever had any interest or curiosity in meditation or might be interested in seeing a course offered here, please drop me a note, as I would love to have a conversation with you about it.

Research: Lost Sleep Can Lead to Weight Gain

A cautionary article from Tara Parker Pope at NY Times:

“For years researchers have known that adults who sleep less than five or six hours a night are at higher risk of being overweight…Now a fascinating new study suggests that the link may be even more insidious than previously thought. Losing just a few hours of sleep a few nights in a row can lead to almost immediate weight gain.”

Research: When Exercise Stresses You Out

From Gretchen Reynolds in the NY Times’ Well section, comes the results of a new study that inquires into the effects of exercise when

someone sincerely dislikes it and “works out only under a kind of emotional duress,” such as when a doctor or worried spouse orders it. While the study was done on rats, the results of the experiment are intriguing. Check it out:
